Marrakech is a wonderful base, but some of the best memories of a trip to Morocco are made outside the city. Within a few hours' drive you can walk beside a mountain river in the Atlas, stand at the foot of a waterfall, have lunch by the Atlantic or explore an earthen fortified village on the far side of the High Atlas.

Moorava offers four day trips from Marrakech, each with transport from your accommodation: the Ourika Valley, the Ouzoud Waterfalls, Essaouira, and Ouarzazate with Aït Ben Haddou. This guide explains what each day looks like, who it suits and how to choose, so you can pick the one that fits your trip.

Ourika Valley: the easy mountain escape

The Ourika Valley is the closest of the four, about 60 km from Marrakech, or about 1 hour by road. You leave the city through rural countryside and climb into the foothills of the High Atlas, where the valley follows the river past mountain villages and small terraced fields.

According to the Ourika Valley day trip page, the day includes private transport with a driver, stops at local places such as an argan cooperative, time in the mountain villages and a walk toward the waterfalls at a comfortable pace. You set off in the morning and are back in Marrakech in the late afternoon. Lunch is not included, but the valley is known for its riverside restaurants, some with tables right by the water.

  • Who it suits: first-time visitors, families, and anyone who wants fresh mountain air without a long drive.
  • Good to know: the path toward the falls can be rocky and uneven, and the page notes that the hike suits people in good physical condition. Walk at your own pace.
  • Tip: the page mentions a possible surcharge if your hotel is more than 10 km from the centre, so check this if you are staying outside the city.

Ouzoud Waterfalls: the big nature day

Ouzoud is about 150 km north-east of Marrakech, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by road. It is one of the best-known natural sites in Morocco: a series of falls dropping into a green gorge, with olive trees, viewpoints and paths that lead down to the pool at the bottom.

On the Ouzoud Waterfalls day trip, you leave Marrakech in the morning in a private air-conditioned vehicle with a driver. At the falls, you walk the paths at your own pace, you can encounter the wild Barbary macaques that live in the trees, and there is free time for lunch overlooking the water. You are back in Marrakech in the late afternoon or early evening.

  • Who it suits: nature lovers, photographers, active families and anyone who wants a full day outdoors.
  • Good to know: the walk down to the base is easy enough, but the climb back up is where you feel it. Comfortable shoes with good grip make a real difference.
  • Tip: swimming may be possible depending on water levels and conditions, so pack swimwear as a maybe, not a plan.

For more detail on the paths, the boats and the macaques, read our Ouzoud Waterfalls guide.

Essaouira: a day by the Atlantic

Essaouira is about 190 km west of Marrakech, around 2.5 to 3 hours by road. After the heat and bustle of Marrakech, this walled port town feels breezy and relaxed. Its medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the fishing port is full of blue boats, and the long beach is made for walking.

The Essaouira day trip includes private transport with a driver from your Marrakech accommodation, with optional stops along the way, for example at an argan oil cooperative. You arrive in the late morning and have several hours of free time to wander the narrow streets and markets, walk along the ramparts, watch the port and stroll on the beach, before heading back in the late afternoon. It is a long day, and you reach Marrakech again in the evening.

  • Who it suits: couples, families, food lovers and anyone who likes to explore at their own pace rather than follow a guide.
  • Good to know: a local guide in Essaouira is not included unless specified, so the time in town is yours to plan.
  • Tip: the coast is often windy and cooler than Marrakech, even in summer. Bring a light jacket.

Ouarzazate and Aït Ben Haddou: across the High Atlas

This is the longest and most scenic drive of the four. The road climbs over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, with wide mountain views and plenty of bends, then drops toward the drier landscapes on the other side. Aït Ben Haddou is about 190 km from Marrakech, and the drive takes 3 h 30 to 4 h each way, about 7 hours in total.

The Ouarzazate and Aït Ben Haddou day trip includes private transport with a professional driver, panoramic photo stops on the way and a visit to Aït Ben Haddou, the fortified village of earthen buildings listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You also discover the region around Ouarzazate, often called the gateway to the desert, and have free time for lunch near the kasbah. You leave early in the morning and return to Marrakech in the evening.

  • Who it suits: history and architecture lovers, film fans (the area has served as a location for many films) and travellers who enjoy a road trip.
  • Good to know: entrance fees to kasbahs and film studios are generally not included, so bring some cash if you want to go inside.
  • Tip: if you get car sick, take something before you leave. The pass road winds for a long stretch, and the page recommends good stamina for the long day.

How to choose the right day trip

All four are full days, so the real question is how much time you want to spend on the road and what kind of day you are after.

By drive time from Marrakech (each way, approximate):

  • Ourika Valley: about 1 hour
  • Ouzoud Waterfalls: about 2.5 to 3 hours
  • Essaouira: about 2.5 to 3 hours
  • Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate: about 3.5 to 4 hours over the pass

By traveller type:

  • Families with young children: Ourika for the short drive, or Essaouira for the beach and flat streets.
  • Nature and walking fans: Ouzoud, with Ourika as a gentler option.
  • Culture and history: Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, or the medina of Essaouira.
  • Couples after a slow day: Essaouira, with free time to wander and eat by the sea.
  • Visiting in the hottest months: the sea breeze in Essaouira or the river and mountain air in Ourika usually feel fresher than the city.
  • Short stay: Ourika gets you back with energy left for the evening.

If you only have a few days, one day trip is usually enough. Our 3-day Marrakech itinerary shows how to balance the city with time outside it. And if you would rather stay close and slow down, a pool day pass near Marrakech makes a relaxed alternative.

Booking and what to bring

Each day trip is booked directly on its product page. You choose your date and the number of adults and children (children have their own rate), then add your name, email and a WhatsApp number. The comment field is a good place for the name of your hotel or riad and any questions. Prices change, so see current prices on each page.

A few things worth knowing before you book:

  • All four pages offer free cancellation.
  • Transport from your accommodation in Marrakech is included on all four.
  • Lunch and drinks are not included, so plan for a meal on the day.
  • Try not to book two long trips on consecutive days. A rest day in between keeps them enjoyable.

For the day itself, pack light but smart:

  • Comfortable closed shoes with good grip, especially for Ouzoud and Ourika.
  • Layers: mountain roads and the coast can feel cooler than Marrakech.
  • Sun protection: hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • Water and a snack for the drive.
  • Cash in dirhams for lunch, drinks, entrance fees and small purchases.
  • A charged phone or camera, plus a power bank for the longer trips.

FAQ

Which day trip from Marrakech has the shortest drive?

The Ourika Valley, at about 1 hour each way. It is the easiest choice if you want a taste of the Atlas Mountains without spending half the day in a vehicle.

Is lunch included on Moorava day trips?

No. On all four trips, lunch and drinks are listed as not included. You have time to eat where you like, whether that is by the river in Ourika, overlooking the falls at Ouzoud, near the port in Essaouira or close to Aït Ben Haddou.

Are these day trips suitable for children?

Yes, all four pages say the trips are suitable for all ages. The main thing to weigh is time in the car: Ourika is the shortest, while Ouarzazate and Aït Ben Haddou mean a long day on the road. At Ouzoud and Ourika, keep an eye on children along the paths.

Can I cancel if my plans change?

Yes. Each of the four day trip pages offers free cancellation.
