Three days is a sweet spot for a first visit to Marrakech. It is enough to get to know the medina without rushing, to spend a day in the mountains or at a waterfall, and to see the Agafay desert before you fly home.

This itinerary splits each day into morning, afternoon and evening, puts the sightseeing in the cooler hours and leaves room to rest. It works best if you arrive the evening before day 1. Feel free to swap the days around to suit the weather, your flights or availability.

Day 1: the medina and its monuments

Morning: palaces and the Koutoubia with a guide

Begin with the history while you are fresh. The guided tour of Bahia Palace, El Badi Palace and the Koutoubia lasts about 4 hours with a professional guide, and its morning slot fits this plan well. You meet your guide on Jemaa el-Fna, stop in front of the Koutoubia (only Muslims may enter the mosque), then explore the courtyards and painted ceilings of Bahia Palace and the vast Saadian ruins of El Badi Palace.

  • Entrance fees to the monuments are not included and are paid on site, so bring cash.
  • Transport is not included, and the tour needs a minimum of 2 participants.
  • The page recommends Monday to Thursday, as Fridays can be busier.

Afternoon: lunch, a rest, then the souks

Have lunch in the medina, then head back to your riad for a break, especially in the warmer months. When the heat eases, dive into the souks and their lanes of lamps, leather, spices, baskets and carpets. Browse before you buy and bargain with a smile.

Evening: sunset over Jemaa el-Fna

Find a rooftop terrace overlooking Jemaa el-Fna for sunset, then walk down as the food stalls fire up and musicians and storytellers gather. Pick a busy stall where the food is cooked in front of you and try a harira or a tagine.

Day 2: a day trip to the Atlas or the waterfalls

Day 2 is for fresh air outside the city. On a 3-day stay, the two easiest choices are the Ourika Valley in the Atlas foothills and the Ouzoud Waterfalls. On both trips, transport from your accommodation is included and lunch is not.

How to choose: Ourika or Ouzoud?

  • Ourika Valley, the shorter day: about 60 km away, around 1 hour by road. The Ourika Valley day trip includes private transport with a driver, stops such as an argan cooperative and mountain villages, and a walk toward the waterfalls at a comfortable pace. You are back in the late afternoon with energy left for the evening.
  • Ouzoud Waterfalls, the bigger spectacle: about 150 km away, around 2.5 hours by road. On the Ouzoud Waterfalls day trip, you travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle with a driver, walk the paths around the falls, may meet the wild monkeys and have free time for lunch overlooking the water. It is a longer day, with a return in the late afternoon or early evening.

In short: choose Ourika for a gentle day or with young children, and Ouzoud if you love nature and do not mind the drive. Our Ouzoud Waterfalls guide covers the paths and what to bring, and our round-up of the best day trips from Marrakech also looks at Essaouira and Aït Ben Haddou.

Morning: on the road

Both trips set off in the morning with pick-up from your accommodation. Wear closed shoes with good grip, and pack water, sun protection, a light layer and cash in dirhams for lunch.

Afternoon: lunch with a view

In Ourika, many restaurants set their tables beside the river. At Ouzoud, you eat looking at the falls and can take the path down to the base afterwards. Go slowly: the climb back up is the tiring part.

Evening: keep it easy

You will be back in Marrakech tired and happy. After Ourika, you may have time for a hammam before dinner, a lovely way to rest your legs. After Ouzoud, have a simple dinner near your riad and get some sleep before day 3.

Day 3: the Agafay desert and a pool afternoon

Agafay is a stony desert of bare hills and plateaus about 40 km from Marrakech, 30 to 45 minutes by road. It has no sand dunes, but its wide horizons, silence and sunsets feel a world away from the medina. There are two good ways to plan this day.

Morning: a quad ride in the desert

The Agafay desert quad adventure takes about 4 hours in total with transfers from your accommodation. After a safety briefing, you ride for about 2 hours with a guide, in a helmet and goggles, with a mint tea break in a desert bivouac. No licence is needed, the minimum age to drive is 16, and a passenger can share the quad with the driver. If you would rather stay near the city, a buggy ride in the Palm Grove lasts 1 hour, priced per buggy of 2 or 4 seats, with transfers included.

Want everything in one booking? The Quad, Lunch and Pool at Agafay pack with transport fills the day: a group transfer, a 2-hour guided quad ride and a tea break, then a camp with a lunch of starter, main and dessert, pool access, sunbeds and towels. Quad drivers must be 16 or older, a minimum of 2 people applies, and payment is on site on the day.

Afternoon: pool time

With the pack, your afternoon is already sorted: lunch, then the pool until the group transfer back. If you did the quad on its own, you are back in town for lunch. Rest through the hottest hours, then head out to Le Bedouin Agafay, which offers a pool and dinner formula that starts in the afternoon, by a pool overlooking the desert. It means a second drive to Agafay, so the pack is simpler if the sunset is not a priority.

Evening: sunset, then a last dinner

At Le Bedouin, the evening continues with sunset over Agafay and a traditional Moroccan dinner with live music and performances. If you chose the pack, spend your last evening in the medina: a rooftop dinner, a final mint tea and the souvenirs you were still bargaining for. Practical tips for your 3 days

  • Where to stay: a riad in or near the medina puts day 1 within walking distance and gives you the atmosphere. Hotels in Gueliz or Hivernage are more modern and easier to reach by car, while the Palmeraie is quieter but further out.
  • Getting around: walk in the medina, where many lanes are too narrow for cars. For Majorelle or Gueliz, take a petit taxi and agree the fare before you set off or ask for the meter. The day trips, the quad and the pack include transfers from your accommodation; for Le Bedouin, check the transport option on the page.
  • Pacing: sightsee in the morning and late afternoon, rest in the middle of the day, and skip the late night on day 2.
  • What to book ahead: the guided tour, your day trip, the quad or the pack, and the pool day pass. Each of these pages offers free cancellation. The square, the souks and dinner need no booking.

Variations: families, couples and very hot days

  • With children: pick Ourika over Ouzoud for the shorter drive. The guided tour suits all ages and Le Bedouin describes its experience as family-friendly. The quad and the pack suit families with teenagers, as quad drivers must be 16 or older. For younger children, horse riding in the Palm Grove is open from around 5 years old with an adult, and a pottery class in Marrakech welcomes children from 3.
  • As a couple: keep the sunset dinner at Le Bedouin for your last night, book a spa hammam on the evening of day 2, and if you are happy with a very early start, swap the day 3 quad for a sunrise hot air balloon flight.
  • On very hot days: take the morning slot of the guided tour and leave the souks for late afternoon. Choose Ourika for mountain air, do the desert early on day 3 and spend the hottest hours by the pool.

FAQ

Are 3 days enough in Marrakech?

Yes, for a first visit. Three days cover the main monuments and the souks, one day trip and a taste of the desert. With a fourth day, add a second excursion or simply slow down.

Do I need a guide for the medina?

Not for the square and the souks, which are fun to explore alone. For the palaces, a guide adds a lot: the stories behind Bahia and El Badi are easy to miss without explanations.

Is lunch included on the Ourika and Ouzoud day trips?

No. Both pages list lunch and drinks as not included, and both days leave time to eat, by the river in Ourika or facing the falls at Ouzoud.
