The Agafay desert is the easiest way to swap the busy streets of Marrakech for wide, quiet horizons without a long road trip. In a single day you can swim in a pool facing bare hills, take your time over lunch or dinner, watch the sun go down and be back in the city the same evening.
This guide explains what Agafay really looks like, then walks you through the desert camps Moorava lists as day passes, the activities you can add and the packs that combine them. Everything below comes from the experience pages themselves, so you know what each formula covers before you book.
What is the Agafay desert?
Let's be clear from the start: Agafay is not a sand dune desert. It is a stony desert of rolling hills and dry plateaus in shades of ochre and beige, about 40 km from Marrakech. If you are picturing tall golden dunes, those are in the Sahara, many hours further away. Here you get open, mineral scenery, big skies and, on clear days, views toward the Atlas Mountains.

That is exactly what makes it practical. Agafay is 30 to 45 minutes by road from Marrakech, so it works as a half-day or full-day outing rather than an expedition. The desert is dotted with camps, many with a pool, a restaurant and lounge areas facing the hills.
Agafay desert camps you can book as a day pass
The seven camps below are listed in no particular order, each described from its own page. Formulas can change, so open the page to see current prices and availability.
Le Bedouin Agafay
Le Bedouin Agafay mixes a pool day with an evening program. There are two formulas: pool access and lunch (from 10am to 6pm), or pool access and dinner (from 3pm until 11pm or 11:30pm). After sunset over Agafay, dinner is a traditional Moroccan meal with live music and performances. A welcome mint tea is included, vegetarian options are available on request and the page describes the experience as family-friendly.
Be Agafay
Be Agafay is a stylish camp around an hour from Marrakech, with a pool, a jacuzzi and lounge areas. Its formulas are a two-course lunch with pool access, a three-course dinner with pool access, a three-course dinner only, and a sunset aperitif with canapés followed by dinner at the restaurant. Towels are provided and children usually get reduced rates. The page advises against driving there without a 4x4 because the access road is challenging, so a private transfer is the easier choice.
The White Camel
The White Camel sits in the peaceful Agafay landscape 30 to 45 minutes from Marrakech, with a panoramic pool, lounge areas and towels. Choose pool access with lunch, pool access with dinner, or a full day with both meals, each served as starter, main course and dessert. Drinks are usually not included. Children pay the adult price. If the sunset matters to you, the dinner or full-day option lets you stay for it.
Agafay Valley
Agafay Valley is a scenic camp among rocky landscapes, 30 to 45 minutes from Marrakech. The day pass pairs a panoramic pool with a Moroccan lunch or dinner, with towels and lounge areas included. What sets it apart is its evening entertainment. Drinks are generally extra, and child pricing is offered for certain age groups.
WE Agafay
WE Agafay is an upscale venue 30 to 45 minutes from Marrakech, aimed at couples, friends and celebrations. You pick pool access with lunch or with dinner, a meal blending Moroccan and international flavours, with sunbeds, towels and lounge areas included. A stylish musical atmosphere often comes with sunset. Drinks are usually charged separately, and private or group bookings are possible on request.
La Bohème Agafay
La Bohème Agafay is a camp in the stone desert with Atlas Mountain scenery and a lively daytime atmosphere, with DJ and lounge music through the day. You get the pool, a jacuzzi and lounge areas, and lunch is a full starter, main and dessert. The page also lists a dinner and pool formula. Smart casual dress is recommended, quad or camel add-ons are available, and families are welcome with supervision.
Seven Saints Agafay
Seven Saints Agafay has three formulas: pool access and lunch, pool access and dinner, or a full day with pool, lunch and dinner (starter, main course and dessert). A welcome tea and on-site assistance are included, and the evening is about the desert sunset and dinner under the stars. Note the practical details: payment is on site on the day, and transport from Marrakech is not included, although a private van can be added.
Things to do in the Agafay desert
If you want more than a sunbed, Moorava lists several guided activities in Agafay. Apart from the side-car, each includes a round-trip transfer from Marrakech on at least one option, and most include a mint tea break.

- Quad biking in the Agafay desert: about 2 hours of riding with a guide, around 4 hours in total with transfers. No licence needed, 16 minimum to drive, helmet and goggles provided, tea in a desert bivouac.
- Camel ride in the Agafay desert: about an hour through the rocky landscape, around 3 to 3.5 hours in total. Gentle and open to all ages, with children riding alongside an adult and a minimum of 2 participants.
- Buggy ride in the Agafay desert: 1 or 2 hours of guided riding, 1 or 2 people per buggy and priced per buggy, around 3 to 4 hours in total, with helmet, goggles and a tea break. 16 minimum to drive, beginners welcome.
- Horse riding in the Agafay desert: about an hour on open trails and rocky hills with Atlas views, around 3 hours in total with the transport option. Fine for beginners, from about 5 years old with an adult, bookable with or without transport.
- Jeep tour in the Agafay desert: about 2 hours off-road with a guide, tea in a bivouac and photo stops. A driver takes the wheel, so no licence is needed, and one person can book at the Jeep price.
- Side-car tour of Marrakech: a private driver-guide takes up to 2 people per side-car on a 90-minute or 3-hour ride. The routes cover the Medina and the Palm Grove, so it is a city ride rather than a desert one. Transport is not included; you get a meeting point after booking, or you can add a private van.
- Lunch or dinner at Boujemaa: a Berber camp 30 to 45 minutes from Marrakech for a Moroccan meal under the tent, with music and a fire show in the evening. There is no pool, so pick one of the camps above if swimming matters. Transport is an optional private van.
Agafay packs: activity and pool in one booking
- Quad & Camel Ride in Agafay Desert: a half day of about 4 to 5 hours. A guided quad ride on desert tracks, then a camel ride (at sunset if you book a late-afternoon time) and mint tea. Transport from Marrakech is included, and quad drivers must be 16 or older. Under-16s must be accompanied by their parents.
- Quad, Lunch & Pool at Agafay + Transport: a full day. A 2-hour guided quad ride and tea break, then a camp for lunch (starter, main, dessert) and pool time with sunbeds and towels. Group transport is included, leaving at 9am or 11am and returning at 5pm or 7pm, whichever you prefer. Quad drivers must be 16 or older, the minimum is 2 people, and payment is on site on the day.
How to choose your Agafay camp
No single camp suits everyone, so start from the kind of day you want:

- A long, lazy lunch: all seven camps have a pool and lunch formula; Le Bedouin's runs from 10am to 6pm.
- Sunset and dinner: Le Bedouin adds live music and performances, WE Agafay has a musical atmosphere at sunset, and Be Agafay offers a sunset aperitif formula.
- Lunch and dinner in one go: The White Camel and Seven Saints Agafay both have a full-day formula.
- A jacuzzi as well as a pool: Be Agafay and La Bohème Agafay mention one.
- Families: most camps show a child rate, while at The White Camel children pay the adult price. La Bohème welcomes families with supervision, in a livelier, music-led setting.
- Adding an activity: La Bohème can add quad or camel on request; otherwise book an activity or a pack.
If a swim is the main goal, our guide to pool day passes near Marrakech compares these camps with palace pools in the Palmeraie and a lodge by Lalla Takerkoust lake.
Getting there and booking tips
Transport is the detail that differs most between camps. Several pages recommend a private transfer rather than driving yourself, and where transport is not included, a private van can usually be added as an extra when you book. Check the transport details and the extras on the page before you pay.
- Pool capacity is limited at several camps, and advance booking is required at some of them.
- Payment is on site on the day.
- Drinks are usually extra.
- The pages show free cancellation.
FAQ
Are there sand dunes in the Agafay desert?
No. Agafay is a stony desert of hills and plateaus, not a sand desert. The scenery is open and mineral, with views toward the Atlas Mountains on clear days. For big sand dunes you need to travel much further, to the Sahara.
How far is Agafay from Marrakech?
About 40 km, 30 to 45 minutes by road depending on the place. Most camp pages give that estimate, while the Be Agafay page says around an hour.
Can I visit an Agafay camp just for the day?
Yes. All seven camps in this guide are sold as day passes, with pool and lunch or pool and dinner formulas, and some offer a full day with both meals.
Are drinks included in Agafay day passes?
Usually not. The White Camel, Agafay Valley and WE Agafay pages all say drinks are generally extra, so plan for them on top of your formula.
Is the Agafay desert good for children?
Generally, yes. Most camps show a child rate, the horse ride starts from about 5 years old, quad and buggy drivers must be 16 or older, and children can join the camel ride with an adult.
